Turkey > Aegean Region > Bodrum
From mainly a fishing village, Bodrum blossomed into a worldwide touristic destination in the 80's. It is considered by many as the St.Tropez of Eastern Mediterranean with lively crowds, beautiful seaside, intoxicating nature and gorgeous vistas. It is also a popular yachting destination with abundance of private marinas and facilities. Several world-renowned attractions (like Virgin Mary's sanctuary, Ephesus) are close by, the Aegean islands a stone's throw away, and the Aegean night life is contagious.
Places to visit: Basically, all the coves of the peninsula have ancient ruins, dating back to BC1500, so if you're an archeology buff you will love the peninsula... The list below is just a sample...take it as a little suggestion given to someone who has just a week or two in Bodrum and needs to see maximum sights in minimum time...though nothing in Bodrum is rushed as you will experience firsthand.
Myndos (modern Gumusluk) underwater ruins are probably the best known ruins as well as the St.Peter's Castle built by Knights of St.Jean, located in main harbour. The Castle also houses the world's first and biggest museum of underwater archeology.
One of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, Mausoleum, is right in the heart of the city and can be accessed via narrow, cobblestone streets.
Here's a rundown of top 10 attractions on the Bodrum Peninsula: 1. Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Bodrum 2. Castle of St. Peter, Bodrum 3. Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archeology 4. Six Senses Spa, Yaliciftlik 5. Windmills around the peninsula, esp. Yalikavak 6. Bardakci Cove 7. Bitez Beach 8. Cleopatra's Beach, Bitez 9. Macakizi, Golturkbuku 10. Hadigari Night Club |
